Woke up to a new flock member this morning

Adorable!
Try dipping its beak into the water.
Yeah, I did that a few times. So far, no luck. I did manage to hold it in one hand and dribble a little water onto its beak with the other, and it seemed to drink a little. But that's it at this point. But right now it's spending most of its time hiding under the brooder heat plate, so it might come out occasionally to drink without me knowing it. We'll try again tomorrow.

BTW, I guess this is a good time to ask how chicks tend to do in a brooder solo without any company save for the few instances of human interaction per day? I had intended for it to have a few siblings, but it didn't work out that way.

What is that you are using for bedding? Looks like something a young chick might mistake for food and eat a bunch of it and get impacted. I always start mine on towels in brooder for a few days until they know what their feed is. I sprinkle a little on towel around feeder to help them get to it sooner. As for drinking just keep dipping beak into water and then feed until it gets to know what it is, you can also tap your finger like you're pecking on waterer and feeder to get chicks attention and try for itself.

It's sand, because everything I've read...including here...indicates that it works well for chicks, and that they don't tend to eat it much at all. So far, that appears to be the case with this one. It will eat the chick starter, mostly from my hand, but I have yet to see it try to eat any of the bedding. I'll watch more closely for that though.

Will do. Thanks.

Sand should be ok it does act as a grit also if they do eat some. Just as long as they don't gorge on it. Another tip that may help your new addition to your flock. Alot of folks that use brooder plates for heat tend to put them on an angle back side lower than the front. That way the chick can get as close as it wants to get to brooder plate. With just one there is no one for it to huddle with and may like to wedge itself back deep under brooder plate making sure it is warm enough. That way it has different heights to be able to adjust where it is best for chick.

That makes sense, and is a good tip. Thanks, I'll give that a try. It should be pretty easy to do given that the adjustable legs each work independently.
