Wolf Urine

Ive been researching various repellents and a site says wolf urine will keep coy dogs away. Coy dogs and foxes are gettin my neighbors calves and chickens.
There are no wolves up here so im not worried about attracting wolves, but will the coy dogs stay away if they have never encountered wolves?

Are you talking about coyotes? Coyote and feral dogs will breed when it's advantagous to the Coyote- for instance as coyotes extend thier territory the interbreeding is one adaptation to survival of thier kind when thier numbers are few- it is rare and typically does not occur in established population of yotes such as you have in NY. I remember back in the 70's when the coyote population was increasing here in Northeastern PA- Coy dogs were the belief of many and what we really had was an established and growing population of coyotes. There's a bunch of folks who will sell you coyote, fox, bobcat, cougar, wolf urine, etc etc and you'll never be sure it's the real thing- plenty of folks selling the real thing and trying to give you a quality product, but plenty of folks trying to make a buck out there for sure who will sell you what you want even if it ain't. Find a reputable dealer if your going to order it- can't imagine it would be cheap and for the cost you'll want the real thing if your going to try it. Good luck, Keystonepaul

I think human pee would work better.To keep the yotes at bay,I have flood lights outside and a radio.

Might be TMI, but DBF pees on/around the chicken pen every day and we've had no probs since he started doing that.

No. It will more than likely pike their curiosity and they will want a closer sniff to check out the new canine interloper in the area.

You said that you have no wolves in your area so mmwb is right that will bring them in because they don’t have the fear of wolves because they haven’t encountered one.

If they are wild coy dogs you need to get rid of them quickly. Wild coy dogs are typically larger than coyotes. They have the same wildness and aggression without as much fear of humans that coyotes have. That makes them very dangerous especially to children and your flock.
