Wolf Worms

Does anyone know if chickens can get a wolf worm or otherwise know as a cuterebra?? It is a Bot fly larve. One of my bunnies that share the chicken yard has 2 and I did not know that I even had bot flies. I guess I should have since I now have a mini horse.

I don't know that much about rabbits but I remember my grandma telling me that you should never eat rabbits unless it is a month with an "R" in it because all the other months the rabbits have worms. What kind of worms, I have no earthly idea. If you notice the months without "R"s are the hot months which would be the months more likely to have flies of any kind. Maybe I am just rambling about some old folks rumor or maybe not, again I have no clue about rabbits but hope it helped or started the ball rolling in the right direction. And now I feel stupid because you were not asking about a rabbit in your thread so maybe I should not post until I am fully awake. Can chickens get worms? Yes definitely!! Can they get the same worms as rabbits? Not a clue. Sorry. I suppose its not entirely impossible though.

A quick Google search seems to lead me to say "no" chickens don't get Bot Fly Larvae. Seems to be a mammal thing. I'm very very glad we don't have those here.

Good thing imps aren't mammals Whew!

I had a squirrel one year I photographed on one of my feeders with a bad case of bot fly. Now that I read your post I have been searching all over on line. I did find and article on Chalk-browed Mockingbirds and Shiny Cowbird and bot fly http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3793/is_200707/ai_n19511699/, but nothing on chickens. I will keep looking now that you have peaked my interest. If I do find anything I will sure pop back with the information.

Now that I am awake yet still feeling a bit silly, I have to say that chickens may be able to get it if they had no feathers or if they were very lethargic. I don't think the flies would put forth all that effort to get all the way down to the chicken's skin therefore that is probably why chickens don't get them.
