Okay, my sister has a wolverine that lives on her property. She has no livestock to worry about but is terrified of this wolverine. I am reading information that seems to go from one extreme to the other.
Exactly how dangerous are these things? Are they dangerous to humans? Is her 3 yr old safe to play in the yard knowing that this animal is around?

I would be worried, because I am a mom more than because I am an expert. They are big, strong, and not known to be good natured. No thank you!

We have one near us that has never bothered anyone. In fact, in an article in the local paper last week, they were asking people to look for signs of them in MI because some people hope/believe there may actually be more. These creatures are so secretive and avoid humans at all costs that it is possible that MI does have an unknown population. I don't think your sister has much to worry about, especially if she has no animals. If you'd like to read about our local wolverine, go here. www.wolverineguy.com.

I have heard there might be wolverines in Mich! Isn't that strange that Mich is called the Wolverine state when we have hardly any at all. They say we also have a population of mountain lions too and someone here is southwestern Mich has videotaped 3 of them together! I will check out that website you listed.

If your sister knows where the den is, she needs to make sure that humans stay away from it. I doubt that the wolverine would seek out humans to injure, but a kid poking a stick in his den hole, might be fair game. It might also irritate the animal if a little person was running and tripped in the hole.

Yes, it is a strange thing isn't it? The wolverine state with no wolverines!! If you go to my blog (link below) and find "labels" on the sidebar on the right side of the screen you'll see "wildlife" click on that and you'll be able to see a post I wrote on our local celebrity wolverine with pics taken by my cousin's friend who first discovered her. They came upon her in an open field in winter while snowmobiling.

Good advice--us members of the weasel clan can be a bit territorial. Seriously, I've never heard of them attacking a human. Wolverines (unlike their more noble cousins, the Badgers) are more scavenger than predator. I doubt one would come after you or the kids unless it was injured and starving, or you really, really got on its nerves.

There was one across the mountain in Jackson hole a year or two ago eating out of a bird feeder. Caused quite a stir--they were thought to be extinct in the area!

I have tried to tell her she doesn't really have to worry about it all that much, most wild animals avoid humans at all cost. What she is worried about is that it comes up into her porch and she is afraid that one day they might surprise it coming home, and it will jump them to get out the doorway. So I told her she better secure her porch then

From what I understand it is very rare for a human to see one, they just dont like being near people. I don't think she should worry, just don;t leave the garbage on anything out for it.
