Wondering about small batch straight runs

Well since I must be a complete idiot explain to me how I could have spent the extra money and got pullets when I said that the breed we ordered was offered in straight run only. If they had sold just pullets I would have ordered just pullets. So please explain this to me Since you keep telling us that we should have spent the extra money and got pullets when the breed we ordered DID NOT OFFER JUST PULLETS?

I got 3 chicks from the straight run bin at TSC, 2 cockerels.
Granted the ones they send to TSC may BE all the cockerels leftover from sexing - I wouldn't doubt it.

Doesn't matter to me, I got the 4 pullets that I originally wanted. 4 hens was my goal.

You'd think it would be 50/50 wouldn't you.

For my February hatch, of 12 chicks I ended up with 7 pullets and 5 cockerels.

For my April hatch, of 12 chicks, I'm thinking most are roos. I should know in a couple of weks.Go figure!

A group of 8 is the highest I've run the numbers for. The odds of exactly 50-50 are not great, but the odds of at least 2 pullets is 96.5% of the time. For a run of 5 straight run, the odds of at least two pullets are over 80%. This 80% would be true regardless of additional packing peanuts.

8 male 0 female - 1 in 256 or 0.4%
7 male 1 female - 8 in 256 or 3.1%
6 male 2 female - 28 in 256 or 10.9%
5 male 3 female - 56 in 256 or 21.9%
4 male 4 female - 70 in 256 or 27.3%
3 male 5 female - 56 in 256 or 21.9%
2 male 6 female - 28 in 256 or 10.9%
1 male 7 female - 8 in 256 or 3.1%
0 male 8 female - 1 in 256 or 0.4%

It would take a lot of unbiased samples to get any meaningful data and packing peanuts would distort the odds. I'm not planning on collecting data and plotting it up. I don't see the benefit in that, at least for me. Hopefully, after I get my first order, I'll never order from a hatchery again.
