We took our hen to the fair this year. What I noticed is that the pullets did not take above a blue. Mainly this was because they still had a lot of developing to do according to the judge. She really looked hard at their bone structure.
some things we did to show better was of course the bath about a week before. Gave her small amounts of canned cat food.( makes the plummage really glossy) also oiled the comb, wattles, feet and beak. (for non feathered types) However, we couldn't control that she decided to molt and wasn't at her best. Luckily, everyone else had 4-H birds that were in similar condition.
No one received above a second place rating in the class we were in. And to be honest, I was surprised we didn't get a fourth because of some of the faults our birds had.
The main thing is that my daughter had a blast showing her hen. Going in I told her not to expect that we would do well for a first year in 4-H. It was mainly about watching and learning for next year. But she won showmanship in her division and the hen placed second(big surprise) now she is hooked and wants to get some new chickens. Bad thing is that we are at the limit we are allowed in town

Do you have any friends who live outside of town who might "board" your chickens for you? We had to do that when we first got into birds. We did chores in exchange, it worked out well.
