Hi everyone, thanks for adding me. I'd really like to know what breed Mable is likely to be please. It has been suggested she may be Welsummer x australorp. She's very big, lovely and quiet and doesn't really cackle when she lays.

Got her from a local produce north of Brisbane. Got two others at same time that came from same breeder. I found a picture of another chicken just now that looks like her and they called it an orpington. So I reckon Mable could be an australorp x orpington. Here's the picture of the other one I found on another group.

what do you think.

I was told that this breeder crosses meat birds with egg birds to get lovely quiet birds.

What do you think? Orpington cross? Going out to try getting a better picture of her.

This is a tough call, because Australorps and Black Orpingtons look a lot alike when they are not bred to their breeds standard perfection. I would see if any when else with more insight on cross breeding and breeds would state their 2 cents. Oh you could also put this in the What Breed? Or Gender? fourm: What Breed Or Gender is This?

Welcome!

I think I may have frequented the same Produce Store north of Brisbane and got my first chickens there 4 years ago.

I hope you enjoy BYC. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends
