We bought two turkey poults this year for the first time along with chickens, ducks, and geese. One of the ducks died within 24 hours which we just wrote off as normal loss. From the start we have kept the turkeys apart from everyone else. For the first three weeks everyone did fine and gained weight but then one of our turkeys became really lethargic and wouldn't eat. It was dead the next morning. The other turkey has continued to grow and put on weight and is doing quite well at 7 weeks. I read that there is a virus which strikes some turkeys at about 3 weeks of age and causes them to quit gaining weight so we thought that might be what happened but with no experience with turkeys we aren't sure. Other possibilities we looked at were that the bigger turkey wouldn't let the other one eat.
The bird's poop never looked off and we didn't see any other problems with it.
Any ideas what it might have been? We'd like to get more next year but I'm afraid to if they are going to die mysteriously. I'd like to have more information before we try again. Thanks!
