I have had two Guineas for about 2 year, they have been inseparable, male and female. I started off with three, but lost one on the eve her eggs were ready to hatch, so luckily I had a broody Chicken whom took on 8 of her eggs for me and hatched most of them that night and over the next few day, this was several weeks now as the keets are no longer keets and have started laying! They still stay by their mother chicken and roost with her every night. They share a paddock and our house yard area with a rooster and two other hens.
My issue is in my closed off paddock where I have ducks, other chickens and where the two older guineas hung out, I lost my male guinea, she was killed by our family dog, the guinea went into her yard
We have now roofed her pen yard area so nothing can go visit her, the dog is great around the flock when we are with her, she only goes into her pen at night and if we are not home in the day to keep her safe and stop her from roaming off! Anyway my female Guinea is beside herself and missing her mate terribly. She is with the ducks and the chickens and seems a bit happier today, but they are a flock bird and I suppose she should have a counterpart? I cant sex guineas, I just know that they were male and female as she was the one laying and sitting with her sister whom I lost several months ago...otherwise I have read and I cant tell by the noise etc Anyway in the past I had tried to integrate the two guineas with the others, but the female was very bossy and would fly at them and then they would gang p on her, but now she as lost her mate, she wants to be with them and they don't want her she stays in her paddock and them in theirs they respect each others space, however I opened the gate between paddocks and walked the seven into her and she was soooo excited, but they ran away from her and flew back to their space and a couple went and ran her off too.
So how do I successfully integrate them or is it best to get her a Male friend to have in her own paddock? Would this work better? Only problem is someone has offered me a guinea as they have plenty but they don't know how to tell if they are female or male and I certainly don't!
What to do, any ideas, is she best with a male or doesn't it really matter as long as she has company?
