I had a stubborn respiratory illness going around in my coop. I know one hen has infectious coryza and I just don't have the heart to cull. The other chickens seemed to have different symptoms, namely the rattling cough and sneezing, but not the coryza smell. After rounds of Tylan 50, Sulamet, and Durymicin, I was at my wits end. The Tylan worked for most birds, but not all. And I know antibiotic resistance is an issue for the more lingering cases.
After researching this forum I read about Oxine and its many uses. I've been "gassing" the coop at night with 6.5oz/gallon of oxine in a cheap humidifier for almost 2 weeks. ALL chickens have recovered! Even the coryza carrier is looking symptom free (with the help of some sulfadimethoxine). I cleaned out the coop and sprayed the interior with diluted oxine per the label. It's 200 times stronger than bleach and is safe enough to add to drinking waterers, keeping the spread of disease down.
I highly recommend this product as part of your sanitary practices and disease control!
