wonky silkie

hi I raise silkies too and have this problem with the head shaking. I asked this question to the chicken doctor on the chicken whisper show. if your sure she has NO bugs and her ears are OK it very well could be a vitamin deficiency.here's what I'm trying and it seems to help. I use replimen with iron mixed with a amino acid complex that has around 20 different vitamin and minerals in it. you use it for 10 days straight then for no more than three days a week. the two are mixed together for better absorption into the body. I got mine from First State Vet. the first bottle is called Replimen with iron; the second bottle is called Amino acid. those two are used together. then I bought a B complex called Vita Pro B. it's been working quite well. also trim the crest so that they can see more easily. I've done these things and its really helped mine. mine would shake her head constantly then kind of stare off and kind of look up. it was really strange and hard to describe but since I've started the replamin and amino acid its gotten a LOT better! she doesn't do that as much any more. not nearly as often. I would recommend you try this too! it's made a big difference for my bird and its good for the rest of the flock too! you can find these vitamins and minerals online at First State Vet
once you get to the store click on vitamins; you should see the Repliman with iron liquid and amino acid liquid on that page. the instructions will come with it. I believe its 1 teaspoon replamin mixed with 1 tablespoon amino acid to 1 gallon of water for ten days then after that no more than three days a week. it's made a great difference in my silkie. I also give it to my other three silkies. its very good for them and this mixture is formulated to be readily absorbed by the body and that's what makes it work so well! I'd give this a try and see if it helps her too. it sure can't hurt to try. its been working for me. the bottles last a really long time too because they are quite large and the dose is very small. I use a measurer to dose mine. after I ordered mine it was shipped fast and arrived in about four days. its correct spelling is REPLAMIN with iron
and AMINO ACID SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITIVE SOURCE.. I really hope this helps you out. I wish you the best and hope she gets better soon. this is what I've done for mine and it seems to be working well. I wanted to share this with you. good luck.

I would not breed him or her..however I often wonder how inbred a lot of birds are...if you got another one you were sure was not related to it....it might be ok...but just to be on the safe side I would not

if this treatment works it should be fine to breed your silkie.

another thing I have wondered about, have you checked your water's ph? chickens prefer a slightly acidic water, I run my ph at about 6.5% adjusted from 7% with acv. if your water is to acidic, brewers yeast may work or baking soda. ive never had this problem and not sure what is the best. I know silkies are more prone to problems than a lot of birds, but they are far from impossible to raise.

I wish you the best of luck, and ill be keeping my eye on this thread.

Here is something I posted for another on vaulted skulls of silkies.  It can make them prone to neurological problems and symptoms, especially if they get pecked in the head.

I read this article to and it worried me so bad!!! I have 2 very young silkies, a week or so with vaulted skulls and I'm keeping such a close eye on them. Shame on people for breeding animals this way for vanity. I didn't know why they looked thay way until I had them because all of my silkies up until this year have not had this. And, like any other child, my "wonky" boy seems to have outgrown this problem. I have no idea. I'm going to keep watching him and start the replamin suppliment and cross my fingers. I've only seen him do it once since my first post lol. What a little fart.
