I bought 15 keets 4 months ago. We have a terrible tick problem and thought they could help. I raised them first in the basement, then in a cage in the chicken coop, then when big enough I turned them with the chickens. I read if raised like this when they fly out of the chicken yard they would come back at night and roost in the coop. Now the problem is they don't want to go out. They fly upon the fence but refuse to fly out. A couple did fly out several weeks ago but ran the fence till they were panting so I opened the gate and let them back in. So how do I get these guys to get out and do their job?

Give them some time - they'll get the hang of it. Guineas hate change and I think that's what you're seeing. They have a very strong flock instinct, and when separated you'll see a fairly desperate attempt for those separated to rejoin the flock. Do you have a gate they can walk in and out of? That will help.

Guineas are strong flyers, but they (in my experience at least) avoid flying. Plus they're pretty dumb, and can't figure out that the way the went out is the way back in. Provide them with a way to walk in and out of the pen and a little time and they'll be doing exactly what you want them to (mostly).

I have a gate but at this time I don't want the chickens out due to the garden. Maybe Ill try the ramp. Maybe the chickens won't use it if its a little steep. If not guess Ill wait till the garden is gone and everyone can go out.
