I just moved my 33 - 4 & 5 week old chicks to the new coop last night, and they did great outside their first night.

I also have 6 - 1 week old banties that were in a mini-brooder that got to move up to the big brooder this morning once I cleaned it out from the other chicks. They just look so tiny and lonely in there with just 6 when there were over 30 before. Don't you think I need a few more so they don't get scared or too cold?

If only someone can help me to convince dh of that I'll head right up to TSC for a few more friends.

After all, since I will have the extra space in the new coop, shouldn't I fill it up?

Of course you need more chicks. Tell your hubby that your 6 banties will freeze if the light goes out in the night and you need at least double that for them to produce some warmth or you could argue that you need more chicks because your going to start selling eggs and the ones you have won't be enough when people hear your selling them...

No, no, no! You don't need more chicks. We raised six chicks and they had plenty of social interaction. I'm a firm believer that you get only as many chickens as you really need!
Have fun and stay right where you are!

It depends on what variety is at TSC. If you see something that you HAVE to have then of course you must. I snuck 5 in with my 9 and DH didn't even notice. How you miss 4 silkies and a polish with a bunch of dark brown mutts I will never know, but he was cluelss until I told him.

Plus, I just counted, and we have at least 9 roos in the chicks that we moved outside. By the time we get rid of all but 2 or 3 and move the 7 standards to the other coop, I'll only have about 20 in the new coop that could probably handle twice that many bantams.

I have two chicks together, and they are just fine.
