Wood ashes?

What is the reason for putting wood ashes in a chickens' dust bath? Do they help control mites, or is it lice they help kill?

And where can I buy wood ashes?

Heck if you lived down the street, I wold share some with you We use a wood burner all wiinter. I have lots,and will be saving them now! LOL

As far as I know wood ashes or diatomaceous earth are used to prevent parasites from infesting your birds, including mites and lice. I've never heard of anyone selling it, but maybe you would have luck finding it in the gardening section since people use wood for garden fertilizer. It isn't possible for you to burn some wood of your own?
