1st pic i am guessing its a female ? And in the 2nd pic from left side normal wood ducks its 2 female and 2 males on right with white strip under neck and up to cheek ? Is this correct. Thanks
Are the ducklings in a pen or are they free ranging? With our first ducklings of the year we left them free range after they started getting feathers, but penned them up once they figured out that those flight feathers allowed hem to fly!
Thanks everyone.
They free range during day on the lawn and are locked up at night in a secure shed where they march into.
They are pioned. No racoons or anything like that over here never had anything taken so far.
I just recently purchased a pair of wood ducks and have been keeping them in a pen with my 2 call ducks and a pair of Rouens. Im happy to hear that you can let them free range during the day. I felt bad leaving them in the pen while the others can wander around the yard. I have already clipped their wings and have left the door open on the pen for a few days now they have not left the pen yet but im sure in time they will.
Post some pictures of your ducks! I am sure they are enjoying free-ranging. Just remember to provide ramps up to their nest boxes when breeding season comes along. Are you going to get any other licensed waterfowl? The way I look at it is if I am going to pay for the licenses might as well get many licensed species.
Ill try to get some pictures posted shortly. I may get a few more ducks. I have someone I know that has some more wood ducks for sale but also some mandarins, shovelers, and some pintails. Any input on which is easier or harder to raise would be appreciated.
