I have a flock of 24 both bantams and standards, I live in upstate NY. I currently use shavings the coop is 13x9 with raised floor. I use pellets for the horse and love them, I have been debating using them in my coop. My concern is will they eat them before they turn to dust and if they do will it hurt them? also how deep should I go with them?

Hi ann, welcome to BYC!

I know there is a member in Alaska that uses the pellets. Hopefully she will see your post and help you out.

Glad you joined us! There are some discussions on bedding and floor materials in the Coop & Run - Design, Construction, & Maintenance section. If you don't find what you are looking for there you are welcome to start a thread on it.

Hello :frow and Welcome to BYC! I've used pellets with the chickens, usually just mix them up with the shavings for the winter if I don't plan on changing the litter for awhile, or in damp corners of the barn. I haven't bothered to wet them down like they do with horses usually. I do prefer to mix them with shavings because the pellets are hard to walk on for me. The chickens don't seem to bother them anymore than they do shavings, just scratch and peck around in them.
