I found this display case at a thrift store for $20.00. It really needs some work. Not only does it need a REALLY good cleaning but some of the joints are not really stable. The base is fine and solid but the case itself (which is attached to the base somehow) is wobbly. I will probably be able to tell how that attaches better later when I pull the felt up to replace. I have to replace some glass which will require me to pull off the 1/4 round that is holding it in place and by the looks of it I will have to replace that as well. The front glass also seems to have been replaced but instead of adding 1/4 round to hold it, it looks like they used some sort of reed and nailed it into place, that is really not very sturdy and the glass moves. I was seriously thinking I would have to remove that at the store so the glass would not fall out and break trying to get it home. I guess my questions are how would you go about stabilizing the joints to make them more solid? Since it looks like I have to to start ripping up and replacing alot of stuff on this case anyway (thinking I really need to replace a bit of the trim as well) should I just go ahead and sand everything down and start from scratch for the finish? That would require me to take out the doors by removing one part of the trim and track. I was told that this is an early 1900's piece but I really have no clue. I don't want to "hurt" it any more than it already is. Any help on where to start to get this thing in good order would be really appreciated.
