Woodcarving

This was pretty quick. Maybe an 1 1/2 hours total. The hammering of the brass wire for the tail took a little patience. Its only about 3 inches tall.

The dremel with a sanding drum made this quicker. With it being so small I would have had a hard time with a knife. It takes alot of "squeezing" to hold with a knife. The dremel makes it easier.

Yes, that's one thing about wood carving. You just use what works best and don't worry about being 'pure' about using a knife or carving tool. That took me a bit of time to learn, too. Even the old fashioned carvers making that beautiful furniture used rasps and what-have-you to get down close to where they wanted to be.

I think the key is having fun, and paring away tons of wood with a knife just to get it out of the way isn't fun.

For me its definetly fun but its also kinda relaxing too. Its one of those kinds of things you dont have to rush to get it done.

A sanding drum is priceless! I love woodworking and you too will find some tools are much easier on the hands. The one used on the chicken was a small one that goes to the dremel. They have a metal carving bit that will eat wood quickly. Then I cleaned it up with the sanding sleeve. You still have to hand sand it though.

I absolutely love wooden bowls! You can never get tired of those.

Id love to see some of your work if you dont mind!!Do you use gloves to protect yours hands from carpul tunnel?

The lathe is the easiest and most widely used method. You can carve out a irregular bowl without a lathe. Alot more work this way but it is a different look. It is all in what you want to make or how you want it to look.

A majority of the time it is on the lathe. Once you get it down you can do them fairly quick. The irregular bowls are fun but if you don't have the tools, it means alot of labor.

Two years later, A reply. Are you still carving? I just joined BYC May of this year. Took me a long time to find a wood carving article in the hobby archives. I got my real start by taking a short beginners curse. After the basics I find whittling part the most enjoyable, but a few carving tool are a necessity.. I'm new to posting pictures, & just discovered I have no digital pictures. Let me know if you're still active
