Woodland chickens

It takes time for chickens to expand their foraging range, especially when they're younger. They're naturally cautious, due to all the predators in the world. If I want young chickens to work in an area, I walk them over to it and scratch it up to show them what's there, like their mother would if she was raising them.

My chickens love searching through leaf litter more than anything else. They spend endless hours doing that. All they needed to learn is that tasty little wriggly snacks live under there.

They sure are happier and healthier chickens when they can be out scratching around in the great outdoors. Heck, I feel the same dang way. I dread the city and stress out anytime I need to go into one. I don't like the confinement that the city offers. But hey, that's just me and I grew up in the city

My flock has even discovered the corn fields beyond the woods and now wonder through out there as well. Of course they don't tred far from the wooded area because they take off for them with the slightest fright in the sky.

Cheers to happy chickies!

Yep, Barred Rock. I am breeding them to the Stanard, at least that is the plan....LOL. I bought 48 eggs and only one hatched. Then I got 9 more chicks from the breeder and so far all 10 made it. 4 Roosters and six hens.
