Step one in the bag. I received formal approval of my intended Gambel quail habitat and hatching effort today from the HOA.

Here's the request for your reference should you need something like this. I structured this request with supporting information to make it very difficult for the HOA to say "No".

Enjoy!

Actually, I stole my wife from AZ 40 years ago when we started our military adventures. We needed to put the family back together for some health issues. We are her Mom & Dad's primary health care providers.

I really miss the WY home. Every morning I opened up the master suite picture window to see the Greys River range a mile away. We were 3/4 mile from a NF trailhead. Our wildlife visitors were phenomenal. Deer and elk of course, but my resident lek of grouse, a big horn sheep, and an occasional moose kept things interesting. Never saw them, but wolves, bear, and mountain lions were close by.

Two winters ago, we had 8' of snow and F&G said the valley had 100% fawn kill. Last winter, we had 5' of snow and we fed the deer to get them through. Here's my buddies. They let me go out and feed them without running away. Couldn't get them to eat out of my hand though.

Now that I've got HOA approval, I'm working on the Landscape Design for the quail habitat. I'm looking at a central "Quail Island" with several satellites scattered throughout the acreage with the hardwood, fruit orchard, and garden plantings. I already have an order with the Pitken Center of Forestry with the U of Idaho for delivery in March.

Sourcing shrubs and forbs now, will start Blue Fescue and Blue Gramma grasses when the garage gets finished and use it as my temporary greenhouse/hatching facility. Big joke in WY was I had a similar situation in the garage there with grow lights going in the winter. Neighbors joked along with my little girl about my Mari-joo-wanna farm.😆 If you only knew me!!!:lau

Does anyone know if there's an issue of quail conflicts with butterflies and hummingbirds? I'm also making habitat for them as well. Aviators be my buds!!!

Really looking forward to next spring.

Congrats on getting permission, and thank you for your service!

I'm glad that you got permission to build your quail habitat. That said, when I was looking for my forever home, one of the primary considerations was that it had no HOA/POA to get in the way of my use of my property. Where I'm building now, the only permit I have to get is for a septic system. Otherwise, I'm pretty much free to do as I please. Thanks for your service and good luck with your quail plans.

Looks like we'll be in the new home by Spring Break '25 as hoped.
Looking at Stromberg's and McMurray for the hatching eggs, but not sure of the availability period. I'm thinking May-Aug or something like that.
Was wondering if I can get 2 or 3 hatches out of a single season if the eggs are available. Does anyone have any gouge or intel?
Thanks!

If you're going for coturnix quail, I'd recommend Myshire Farm or Thieving Otter Farm. Thieving Otter got the bloodlines from Southwest Gamebirds, but Southwest isn't selling anymore.

Thanks Nabiki. I'm going to go for Gambel's for this conservation effort.
