I think it's a voice inflection thing.
I have had to deal with several nationalities and sometimes when they say "Good Morning, How are you today?" It sounds like an interrigation with bamboo shoots up the fingernails for getting the wrong answer.
Many times what they are THINKING and what they are actually SAYING are two different things.
Culturally, in some places if your boss gives you something it is ment that you can't afford it and must be given charity. (AND/OR) the boss gives you something so now you are under their control
Best thing is to TALK to the employee to get their side of the story because it could just be a misunderstanding on BOTH parts.
