Worm composting....

Last edited:
I have vermicomposted for about 3 years with indoor bins in my kitchen. We just built an outdoor bin in late winter, gradually stocking it til spring when temps stayed steady over 60 degrees. Then I added the worms from my kitchen bins. It took all summer but the outdoor bin is very successful. This will be my first winter with the bin outside but my plan is to only disturb the bin to feed when we have the warmer days, otherwise, keep it closed up. I haven't given the chicken any worms yet. I just got my silkies in July. I feed them mealworms I raise regularly. This next spring I was thinking of letting the girls eat the worms out of the compost, then taking the cleaned up compost out to the plants to fertilize. Now that I think of it, why wait til spring.... maybe I will try it this weekend. Should be quite a show when I turn them loose! jane in NC

Jane, that should be a fun free-for-all to watch! Worth some laughs!

Seems like a win-win situation, where everyone's happy.
BTW, did you buy the mealworms locally (maybe at a pet store?) and then raise them yourself from the starter batch? I've thought of doing that.
