worming ~ there has to be an easier way

I wormed my little flock of 5 last night with Safeguard. Was very glad at that point I didn't have more than 5. There has to be an easier way than a syringe. I tried putting the wormer in a bit of bread before but they spit it out and another chicken got wormed 2-3 times garbing up the others bread ball. I would really like to find a 'natural' wormer that actually works. I know folks with large flocks don't hold each bird, try and get the beak open, then try and get the correct amount of wormer in the mouth. Any suggestions please. Oh yes, I understand if I use the Safeguard I don't need Wazine, is this correct. Thanks BYC family.

Yes, it's correct that you don't need to use Wazine if you used Safeguard. Safeguard kills most worms, including roundworms. Wazine kills only roundworms.

I never had any trouble with their eating the little chunk of bread, but you do have to give it one by one, then separate the others, to avoid one chicken getting more than one dose. I use Valbazen rather than Safeguard; I have no idea whether this makes a difference. I know of others here who prefer they syringe method. If you drip a tiny amount of a liquid along the side of their beak, they will ordinarily open and take it in, then you can just squirt the rest in.

I have never read of any "natural" wormer that works, that kills all worms. The link below is to a thread that has a lot of information about this.

There are differeing opinions here about worming your chickens, though. We have members who have had chickens for decades and never wormed. Often they select for hardier birds, and the birds may free range, so that they may even be eating plants that rmove some or all worms. As you will see in the link above, though, we have members who have learned through necropsy that worms and their complications killed their bird.

You can have someone hold the bird for you Dee Dee. Then pull the wattles down and the hen will open her mouth, use a syringe without needle and shoot 1/2cc of the liquid in the hens mouth and let go of the wattles IMMEDIATELY so she can swallow the liquid on her own. If you dont let go of the wattles, she'll can aspirate. I've wormed 20 birds in 20 minutes holding the bird in my forearm clutched close in to my body and using my free hand to administer the wormer orally AND I was taking my time doing it.
Practice it, you'll be a pro in no time.
