I gave my girls Valbazen 4 days ago specifically because one has tapeworms and we decided to worm all just in case of roundworms, and we aren’t sure which eggs are hers to separate out If we just wormed her. Ok, so I have been extra diligent this week about keeping their run clean by clearing it of poop everytime I am out there with them (which is usually 2-3 times each day). (we have sand in their run and coop. I clean their coop daily anyways and often in the run when I let them out to roam in the yard). This morning, shortly after when I let them into their run they all proceeded to poop and I saw evidence of a single roundworm in one, so yay!! But I also saw our tapeworm girl poop had a bunch of tape segments still in it. My question is, does the Valbazen usually kill the tapeworms after the first or second dosing or when can I roughly expect to see evidence of the tape worm being killed or expelled in full? I am following the course and redosing them along the Valbazen timeline, I was just curious to know when I would see that she was in the clear.

thanks!

Valbazen can be used for treating tapeworms if given for multiple days in a row, but the better thing to use is a wormer containing praziquantel. Those include Equimax horse wormer. Dosage is 0.033 ml per pound or 0.16 for a 5 pound chicken. If using Zimectrin Gold horse paste, the dosage is twice as much. Repeat the dosage in 10 days. Tapeworms have intermediate hosts, such as snails, slugs, flies, beetles, and earthworms. If your chickens eat those, they may be getting re-exposed.

I REALLY appreciate this kind of well detailed question and thoughtful, thorough answer. Thanks to both of you for taking the time to provide a real learning opportunity to the rest of us. It’s what I come to BYC for.

I am confused now, I understood that Valbazen was given twice, spread apart by approx 10 days for the treatment of variety of worms, including tapeworm. I do not want to change the worming setup mid treatment, but are you saying that the Valbazen I administered will not be working unless I give it to her everyday?
