Worming

My chicks are 23 weeks and healthy. I've read it's time for the first worming. They stay in the pen all the time. The feed store recommended Wazine 17. Has anyone used this? I only have five chickens and a 3 gallon waterer. How much do you use? The feed man said 1 ounce per gallon of water. I'm afraid it will make my chickens sick. You know the saying: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Let me know if you use Wazine 17 or something else. Thanks.

This is really something you have to decide for yourself. Some people never worm, some worm 5 or 6 times a year. And some areas' soil carries more worms than others. I know there are worms where I live, and I usually worm twice a year with Valbazen (albendazole.)

Piperazine (Wazine) is the only wormer officially approved for poultry - but it only gets roundworms, and as you will see from the chart linked below, there are other worms that affect them. Many people use other wormers, often sold for use in cattle, goats, etc.

I've never used Wazine, and I'm not sure that is the right dose. Since it is meant for chickens, I would think the bottle would tell you how to use it.

From what I have read yes u can not eat the eggs but I'm new to chickens my self

Yes, you do. There is one very pricey wormer called Flubenvet, I think, that you don't. But for all the normally available ones, you have to throw all the eggs away for 2 weeks. And don't use Wazine. As stated, it only gets roundworms. Valbazen is much better but there are others, mostly horse and goat wormers, that I can't remember the names of just now.

What is the youngest that one can worm a chicken? I have an americauna which came from the feed store and has had runny poo since I brought her home and a few other of my chickens have it also. I am guessing that worming might help. I do have the same problem I had in the first of the year with tapeworm, so I am going to worm everyone. Some of my girls and 2 roos are sneezing so I am guessing they need it also. I hatched out 2 girls and as of this morning 1 boy. They were born May 6, 8, & 15th. Are they ready to be wormed? The two I brought home from the feed store were born the 22nd of May. Could someone please help me with this question? I would like to get this done ASAP.

Flubenvet isn't available anywhere and VernX (a product that appears to be an American version of it) is out of stock.

Does anyone wait until their chickens are moulting and not laying anyway to treat for worms?
