Worming?

I see allot of posts on here about hens with worms. Can you worm them as a preventative? And if so what do you give them?

And by the way I love this Backyard Chicken site. Before I found it I thought I was the only one that loved her girls like they are part of the family.

Yes, you can. I worm once a year with Valbazen, 0.5 ml for each large fowl, on a bit of bread, and repeated in 10 days. Egg withdrawal is 24 days. I happen to know there are worms on this property, though; it is moist and warm here. Some people never worm and have healthy free range flocks. These birds may be eating something that at least keeps their worm population in check. Some will use only "natural" wormers, such as garlic, cayenne, pumpkin seeds. I've never seen any documentation that any of them work to rid a chicken of worms. These are the links I keep on the subject.

I also use Valbezan, I worm mine from the roost with someone giving a hand. As each bird gets their dose I then put it in the run until all are done..

Valbezan can be ordered from Jeffers online, if you can not source it locally.

I worm with pour-on Ivermectin for the all-in-one mites and lice benefit too.

thanks every one for the info. What did you mean flockwatcher about egg withdrawal 24 days? I will definitely check into this. Much rather have them healthy and not have to worry about worms.

Typically when you worm you will not eat the eggs for a period of time different drugs have different times,
