Worms in chicken poop

Hi,

I am relatively new to keeping chickens. I have 4 hens and a rooster. Today while collecting eggs, I noticed a large abnormal poop. It had blood in it along with white, long, thin worms crawling out. It was very disgusting. I don't exactly know what to do. My chickens seem fine, are eating and active. I believe I need to worm them? What do I get? I feel as though I should completely clean the coop and run...I clean it every other day usually. I am freaking out! I do have a pic...but its gross. Let me know if I should post it.

Thank you for all your advice!! :)

Jenny

Hi Jenny,

If you have a picture, it always helps to post it. Don't worry, we've seen lots of gross ones!
Sounds like Roundworms to me, but without a pic, I could be wrong. One wormer that's readily available is Wazine 17 and it goes in the water. It ONLY kills roundworms though. The best one to use is Valbazen. I just ordered some on Monday and it got here today. I can't get it at TSC or any feed store here. It kills all worms. The best advice you can get on worming is from Dawg53. I'd do a search on "Worming with Valbazen" and look for his posts. I used the Wazine right off the bat because I could get my hands on it immediately. I followed up today with the Valbazen.

Good luck!

Here is a pic. If it is roundworms, then I will go to feed store tomorrow, and treat them all

Looks like roundworms to me. If you go the Wazine route, you'd need to put 1oz. per gallon of water. I'd also recommend using the Valbazen if you can either find it or order it. That one you have to administer by syringe (no needle), orally to each bird. The dosage for that is 1/2cc for Large fowl and 1/4cc for Bantams. Make sure you toss any eggs and you need to repeat in 10 or so days to make sure you get any worms that have newly hatched. Toss eggs again for a couple of weeks after that as well. If the Valbazen had been readily available I'd have skipped the Wazine altogether.

I put the link in for you to read through. It's very good advice!

Thank you so much for your help! I will get the medication tomorrow. I really appreciate the info.!

I have a rather long posting that is on my signature line at the bottom of my posting. Valbazen is a great medication for worming. Read through the information and feel free to comment and ask questions. We have all been new to chickens once (or new to worms) at one time or another. Let's all learn from each other.
