I’m having trouble finding the dosages on the other threads so hoping someone can make it simple for me.

I believe my flock has gape worms. Evidence in feces and by the flock gaping to breathe.

I have a mixed flock of adults to the youngest being 6 weeks old.

What dosage of Safguard Suspension 10%?

Thank you

Shake the bottle well since it settles. Dosage is 0.23 ml or 1/4 ml per pound of weight of each chicken given orally for 5 consecutive days. Using a needle less syringe is a good thing for accurate dosage. That treats round, cecal, capillary, and gapeworms.

Another question.
Is this something I should have been doing yearly , quarterly?

And what should I look for to make sure the treatment is working?

Just noticed when doing some cleaning roundworms in poop … still slightly moving. Is this a sign it’s working? -and I have noticed the birds that were gasping/ gaping aren’t anymore.

Safeguard for cattle and goats. Used it for the past 15 years on my animals. It contains the below "simple google search".

Fenbendazole is an effective treatment for gape worms (and many more parasites) in chickens, typically administered at a dosage of 1 mg/kg body weight for five consecutive days. It can be given orally or mixed with their drinking water for easier administration.

  • Adult Chickens- 3cc per gallon of water mix.
  • Baby Chicks- 1cc per gallon of water mix.
  • 3-5 day dose.
Drinkable by humans and the birds.

Note needed by me...
most people think a one time treatment will solve the issue then forget about the future... Wrong!
Fenbendazole is a paralytic that only paralyzed the adult worm and its larva state.
Ummm, if its an adult worm then it has already laid eggs in the host (chickens, cows, dogs, goats etc).
Fenbendazol will not effect the eggs laid in the host(s) system.
The eggs must hatch into the larva state.
In such 3+ treatments spaced out over the period of a month... but that is no guarantee ALL worm eggs have hatched. Some can lay dormant for 6+ months in the host.
So its not a one time fix all. Keep at it for at least 2 months.

But the Safeguard (F...) applies to more than just the Gape! Pins, Round, Brown, and several more.

Just keep in mind it only paralizes the worm which is pooped out. It can be re-eaten by other chickens that see the worm as a free meal. The paralized worm still has eggs in its body and some might get into other birds without the worm. So its best to Isolate the infected bird(s) and clean out any pooped out worms and eggs.

I think Fire to the ground is the best killer. Diesle fule and even gasoline. If too much for you just make a big bonfire and put the hot coals on the ground and let them die out naturally.
Keep a hose pipe handy and the water turned on of course.
