Worried about BYC! Anyone feel the same?

I would have to agree with that!

Everyone I have encountered on here has been great, a little cliquey at times but still friendly and helpful.  Wanting to learn as much as I can before I get my chickens next month, I does get a little annoying (especially at night when I mainly use the computer) that is is mainly game stuff popping up in "recent activity" feed.  I have nothing against games at all, for those that play them that is awesome  but I would like to know all that I can and be an informed chicken owner - I had no idea about problems chickens can encounter before coming to this site so it has been very helpful.  As I have no idea what to look for, I like to see what pops up on the news feed if someone does have a problem and see what others say to help.

Is there a way that you can customize totally what pops up on the recent activity feed - like I said I am new here and don't really have a clue if that is even an option.

An option to exclude categories would be fantastic!

I think what MKK is trying to get at is this: A lot of people who know a lot about chickens, and could be helping out with raising chickens are focused 100% on the games, jokes, and fun forum, and because of that it is the most active on there. I think this thread is not against that forum, it is reflecting his own large activity on that forum. Am I right, MKK?

I just read this whole thread. Honestly, if you don't want to be a part of the GJF section, then you don't have to go there! It's like what Nifty said awhile ago-- they split it up into sections on purpose. So, for the people who probably aren't kids and don't have interest in the GJF, they don't have to go there and can stick to the chicken-related categories. Some people will only post in GJF, and so what? You don't have to be the Thread Natzi, just keep your business to yourself!

I think that BYC is fine if some people post only on the GJF, or some only post on chicken-related categories. I have a mixture of both, and that's why BYC is so great-- cause it has such a nice mixture, and we don't have to constantly be seeing RP's or chat threads-- you can look in the chicken-related categories, and that's all you see. Honestly, we don't have to make a big deal about this. BYC is great just the way it is.

I don't understand WHY the number of chat threads should bother anyone at all, they do not keep you from doing anything else on this site-
A group of friends started our chat because we didn't want to muddle up the threads that are for other topics and there to help others with their Q & A.. Like minded people sometimes like to talk about other things than just chickens....as a group. This is not endangering anyone else's enjoyment of this site. There is a necessity to have other topic areas to address things other than chickens. My chat thread is not PRIVATE- If you want to have fun, come visit for a while. I think it is great that there is a place we can go to talk with others.We have a blast in our chat- now if we were bantering back and forth about something un -chicken in a particular chicken related thread
people would be complaining-
The only answer is to have the off topic areas. Nobody is smacking you over the head to chat, and our chatting is not keeping you from chicken business or learning anything you want to know about chickens.

Try looking at it like this- every single thread IS a chat session, no matter how long the thread is, or the topic at hand.

I, personally, think it is annoying that people go on, don't search for answers, then start a thread for a simple question, but I am not complaining. If I seee a simple question posted, I answer it if I can.
Please do not feel threatened by the games, jokes, fun area- participate, then you will understand it

If I was going to make a guess, I would think that many
of our younger members check into the game room. But
regardless of age, that's what the members posting in the
game and joke threads are into.

I seldom check there. But that isn't what I'm into. I don't even
understand the ones I have looked at.

I do look at the gardening, the DIY, or any of the areas that
interest me.

And I appreciate those areas. There is a lot of knowledge about
a lot of things on Backyard Chickens.

But I'll also bet that that many of our younger members seldom
check the gardening, DIY, or even the for sale section.

Because at this point in their life, that isn't what a lot of gamers
are into.

As Nifty said, those that actually put this board together and run
it have done an awesome job. For me, this is not one of the best
sites on the internet : it is the top site. We are as diverse a group
of people as we can be.

So much more that chickens happening here.

Take me for example. I'm the Spook, a three year member here.
I don't post a whole lot and when I do it is almost never about a
chicken. Such a wealth of chicken knowledge here, I know I'm
outgunned. So I read along. And learn.

But once and a while, I might post a little something in the Random
Ramblings are. Not much, but a little bit. And I hope along the way
that we've made a few people smile. Once in a while some of my
friends put some pretty funny stuff on there.

I know that some people read it, some don't.

And that's the point.

We aren't all into the same thing.

But we are members of the same forum.

Do you know what, I'd say really we are all like a huge extended family. Some people are related but don't really get on with each other and others are best of friends then the admins and the mods are the peace keepers. They put everybody in their place and quietly shoosh them back into the section that best fits their mood. But through big eggs and small eggs we will stick together as a family of online poultry lovers!
