I hope someone can help as I’m rather anxious about this.
I’ve read on here that Mareks Disease can be prevalent and that chicks should be/may be immunised at a day old.
I live in the uk and am hoping to get 3 Buff Orpingtons in the summer to add to my Silkie trio (2 hens and a rooster)
We were given the eggs to hatch from someone who shows them (very successfully) and I didn’t know that I should do this.
My trio are free range in my garden. Their diet consists of layers pellets with a handful of sunflower seeds, mealworms and fruit and vegetables when available from my kitchen. I add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to their water and a tiny amount of kelp, turmeric and diamataceous earth to the feed as I’m wanting to prevent illness and disease.

I DO NOT want to start any disputes about my feed on here! I read a thread on DE and it lost the initial question of the OP because a lot of people disagreed with its use.
My question is about Mereks....
Thank you

Have you read throat this article yet?
The Great Big Giant Marek's Disease FAQ
Well, after quickly skimming through it (loads of information) I can see I’ve missed the deadline for immunisation as it should be done when they’re chicks :jumpy
SO, it’ll be the PREVENTATIVE approach for me :woot
I’ll go through it thoroughly tonight as there was lots of diet advice on the thread.
Thank you for this VERY HELPFUL :highfive:

All said and done. Marek's is really not a preventable disease. There's quite a few discussions on vaccinating or not, it's a personal decision. The Marek's vaccine only prevents the formation of tumors, but birds can still become infected by the virus. Meaning, they can still become ill, paralyzed, have ocular form, etc.

Keeping your girls stress free, providing fresh food/water and keeping a relatively clean and tidy coop/run will all contribute to their well being.

If you read up poultry diseases you can become quite anxious about what could happen. There's always potential for illness within a flock. Take a deep breath, relax, enjoy your flock. Don't borrow worry.
