I'm worried about my Cochin, she laid a gooey bloody mess today in the nest box. I've brought her inside, she's panting a lot which is not surprising as its almost 90F outside right now, I'm hoping once she's cooled down a bit it will be easier to see how she is doing.

Well, that looks like an abnormal egg that contains a yolk and has broken. How old is she? Does she lay normal eggs usually? How does she seem to be feeling? Was she weak or lethargic before she passed this egg? I would give her a human calcium tablet orally and offer some fluids up to her beak. Hopefully this is just an isolated incident or a blip in her reproductive system. Let us know how she feels tomorrow. The following picture is of a type of lash egg from salpingitis or inflammation of the oviduct, and some of those may have yolk inside. There are all kinds of weird eggs.

Well coming into the A/C perked her up to being her bossy self again. She is alert and grumpy about being inside. I hope this means she isn't going to have a problem further but I'll have to wait and see. She is two years old and normally lays just fine, though she is not the most productive layer, the only chicken I have that lays less frequently is my Buttercup who is more of a once to twice a week girl.
