yes so was I....I am a ewwww no yucky kind of person (I cant touch the hand of my DD when it is sticky from candy)...so for me to process my own bird to feed my children is a big step but if my children were going hungry...pass me the knife
Yup , we raise and butcher our own .My DH of course does the Deed ,lol . I do the processing !
I sure i could do it all myself if i had to , but it would be really hard for me .
( Of course we only eat the meat chickens and hens when they done laying. )
We have other chickens ( my babies) that are hands off , Not for eating !
As much as I don't see my chickens as pets, I still don't think I could eat them. My roosters, maybe, but thats because they are mean little poops.
I can eat chicken from the store no issue, I've even learned to buy a whole chicken and do that myself too. But I cannot eat something I've owned, duck, lamb, or game meat.
I agree with mjsdhs though, if it came down to feeding my family, I'd do what was necessary.
I would love to raise meat birds some day (chicken, turkeys, and ducks) but NOT my laying hens. The are pets as well as feeding me with eggs. When they slow down or stop laying they won't be treated any different than my dogs or cats.
I plan to continue having a wide age range of laying hens so I don't ever have a time I am without eggs because the girls got old.
Yes we will be putting some chicken in the freezer. But I can't process them myself. I also won't gut my own deer[ If I ever get one] After watching my husband do it a couple of times I know I won't ever do it myself. Lucky for me he said he would do it .
we raise and process our own chickens, rabbits, duck, geese , etc
Sometimes I do it sometimes my husband does it it all depends on who is home at the time.
of course we also have pet chickens, silkies, OEG and D'Uccles.
I don't even like chicken(the meat that is, i'm allergic),
and besides that, we all agree, our chooks are PETS, and spoiled as all get out, even our meanest roo( a sebright) will not be going anywhere because he is inlove with our bantam hens, and is the only one who breeds the little bitty girl. even when the girls start getting old, and stop laying, here they will stay to live out thier lives,
we have a crippled cochin hen named Libby(Limpy Libby), she has a broken foot thats healed, so she limps on it, but she keeps up, AND she lays, we'd never dream of killing her.
kudos to those who do, thats all fine and good, really it saves alot of money,
I eat my chickens when they outlive their usefulness or cause problems. I don't believe in wasting and I don't believe in pawning off my problem animals on other people so I consume the chickens when they are done here. If feel it's a way to honor them, by not letting them go to waste. I don't see my chickens as strictly livestock, but all my animals have a purpose- even the dog and the cat. If they didn't have a purpose, they wouldn't live here.

We sure do. We only keep a few roosters, the rest are for the table. Have you seen the "meat birds" section here? Many folks here raise chickens for meat.
