So, we were planning on building a coop, but saw this dog house at Lowes today. We are planning on having 4-6 chickens so I think we would need 2 of them. If we were to get 2, would they need to be right next to each other or would opposite sides of the run be ok? It has a hinged top, windows and vents Also, it is cedar, but from what I have read cedar shavings or not good, but solid cedar is ok. Is that correct? The other option we are considering is this hen house. Any thoughts on it?

The chicken coop hen house looks neat! Or actually, why don't you go build your own?

Well, I want to & I bought the Building Chicken Coops for Dummies Book. But my husband isn't convinced. He thinks, and I agree, that it will take a lot of time. The estimated cost for the coop we would like is $700, but it seems like these two options would be cheaper in the long run.

I've built 2 coups in the last year. Both of them cost more and took twice the time I thought it would. In the end though I have much nicer coups than I could have bought. I have $550 into the 6' x 8' coup I built last fall. I used a lot of donated materials though. That coup would sell for twice that. So my advice, if you think you can do it then do it! Plan for it taking twice as long. I am very happy with my last one. My borther, tyring to get a rise out of me, told me my new coup looked like a doll house. I thanked him for the nice compliment. And to think......it's not even done yet. I have more I want to add to it.
