hey all, we have a pretty big (1+ acre) field that our goats like to be in. I've considered letting our chickens out with them but it's pretty damn open and I've seen a hawk or two over the field more than once. Would having goats in the field act as a deterrent?

they currently hang out in a decently sized tree + power line covered area that, if out in the field, they could run back into at any time- but I've heard chickens are pretty bad at noticing hawks until they've become dinner :idunno

Probably. Dogs deter them. Geese are awesome chicken guards too. They skwak so darn loud when they see one!

Probably your goats won't care, although hawks may decline to fly right next to them. Chickens aren't fond of open areas, especially if they have had a bad experience out there. They are jungle animals, and prefer shrubs and trees. Mine do spend some time in the pasture, but often just run across it to find more interesting places.
