I am sorry I am a little confused...I have been getting different stories...
I have a buff cochin roo and a buff silkie hen, if I cross them would I get frizzle or sizzles? I know if I get either it will be 25% and how many eggs do I need to shoot for? (this will in be in the spring)

I am assuming that the cochin is frizzled?

Frizzled is the name of the trait where the feathers curl backwards. It can be (and is) found in any breed. In Europe (I think?) it is an actual breed.

A sizzle has all silkie traits except for feathering. A frizzled silkie would have frizzled AND silkied feathering (F/f+ h/h). A sizzle has frizzled and NOT-silkied feathering (F/f H/?)

Since silkie feathering is recessive, and other silkie traits are dominant or incompletely dominant, the F1 progeny from a frizzled & silkie breeding should give fairly decent sizzles. However all those birds will be split for the silkie feathering gene, and will pass it on to about half of their offspring. If bred to a silkie or to another split will will end up with some frizzled silkies. As the other genes segregate you will also get some with correct combs and some with incorrect comb. And the same for all other silkie traits: foot feathering, crests, number of toes, dark skin, etc.

Oh, and in the first cross all 50% of the offspring should be frizzled, giving you sizzles, and 50% should be smooths (unless your frizzled bird is a curly). In any case the birds will not have as good a quality of foot feathering, and muffs/beard and crests will be lacking; skin may be too pale.

In F2 birds you need to select against the yellow skin inherited from the cochin and the silkied feathering from the silkie. You need to select for correct numbers of toes and correct comb shape.

no my cochin in a smooth, I was however given the impression I could get a frizzle/sizzle from crossing them. Or does it take having a frizzle? thanks so much for the help!
