Would it be cruel to keep a rooster separate but together?

Did you ever figure out anything? I actually bought a small coop today and plan to put it together tomorrow. One of my boys will be living in it for now. He's way too aggressive during mating and starting to injure my girls. Plus, he keeps trying to fight my big rooster. The bad thing is he's very human-friendly. Anyway, I feel bad for him, so I don't want to get rid of him (I know he won't last long wherever he goes), so I'm going to try a bachelor pad for him. He'll still be able to see the others, but they won't be able to touch them.

Currently 2 cockrels and 2 pullets are still together in their 4x10 coop and 10'x12 run.
The smaller cockrel definitely matured fast and is quite flighty and easily freaked. They are 4 the same age and hatchmates. But the other cockrel is twice size of all of them even though from the same dad and group of hens.
The larger cockrel just last week started asserting himself with the smaller one and so fa so good. But they are only 4 months old.
I have a separate pre-fab coop that I can use if needed as a bachelor pad. I just hate to do that unless absolutely necessary.
So I'm just taking it a day at a time.

That's what happened with me. The little one matured faster and is super flighty. He bullied the big one, but now it's the other way around. I will say don't put it off if you really think you need to separate him. I've waited too long, and several of my girls have bald spots, and one has a leg injury, and I had to bring one in the house for a few nights because she was just absolutely terrified of him. He should finally be moving tomorrow or Tuesday, thank goodness!

They're about 8 months old. I got them two days after they hatched, around the first of July last year. The squabbles started in November/December.

Yeah sounds alot like what I started out with in May of last year ...3 silkies and 1 polish. Polish and 1 silkie were male and polish matured n grew fast!
He also wasn't true bantam like I was told. He was very aggressive mating and one silkie pullet was super depressed and became lethargic til I rehomed him and she perked up amazingly!
Thankfully I am still in touch with new owner and he's doin great with standard chickens!

I have a couple of Polishes in with mine now, and one of them has been very depressed. I brought her in, and she was fine, so I think she's trying to get away from him. I'm going out to set up his new place now!
