Would like to learn anything about brahmas

I have a darlin' little Dark Brahma bantam roo and am desperately hoping to find a couple of matching DBB ladies for him. Any help would be appreciated! He's such a gentleman.

This spring I'd like to order Blue Andalusians, Welsummers, Barnevelders, (more) EEs and Buttercup pullets (and matching roos) so my silkies can hatch full blooded chicks - I'm hoping to find the dark brahama bantam hens somewhere without having to order straight run.

I nice thing about the Dark Brahmas is that it is alot easier to tell the hens from the roos as each has different coloring.

This is my Dark Brahma Roo Rocky at 3 months that I took today.

His coloring is so different from the Hens.

As far as coloring, I like the Dark Brahmas best, but they are all nice birds. Personally I prefer the miniature (bantam) size though. Standard heavy breeds are more predisposed to foot problems. I had a St Light Brahma Rooster that developed bumbefoot, it was terrible, and they were free range. Absolutely NOT acceptable as cage birds. I really tend to stay away from large fowl for a variety of reasons, but I did have some St Dark and Light Brahmas when I was in HS, and LOVED them, good, steady, reliable layers-even in harsh weather, slow paced and not flighty. I never had any go broody, but I have been told they will set their own eggs.

Featherfooted, thanks for the pics. Beautiful birds. I just wish spring would hurry up and get here!
I have free ranging on my lists of things to try, but certainly not right away. The SO tells me they've never really had a problem on this farm with predators bothering chickens, esp. with good farm dogs around, but I won't be taking any chances with my new babies.

Kat,

Brahmas are my favorite breed! I had a light brahma pullet and she was my favorite of the flock. She was unfortunately killed by our neighbor's dog and it broke my heart to find her dead. She had a very bubbly, friendly personality, even as a chick. She was a great little forager too - she caught and ate a little snake at 2 mo. of age! I got it on video and you can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M94Zt3ZMdjk

I'm
eager to replace her with another light brahma in the spring and I'm considering getting a buff and a dark one as well, that's how impressed I am with the brahma breed. I guess it's hit or miss on them as far as temperment goes. Some people seem to get friendly ones and others seem to get ones that are aloof. I got mine from Ideal Hatchery in Cameron, TX and that's where I'll get mine from again.

Great photos Featherfooted! It looks like you've got the same taste in chickens I do - cochins and brahmas - the big, feathery gals!

Yep, love those big fluffy butts. I've tried other breeds, but I'll stick to Brahmas and
Cochins now. I do have 5 Speckled Sussex for eggs and Silkies too, but the fluffy butts are still my favorites.
