Would plastic tie-straps around their legs hurt them?

Most show birds get rings on their legs....I order the breed size of the rings before hatching season.

If you are using ties, just make sure that you keep track of growth, so that the ties don't become too tight as the bird gets bigger

That's why I added the "foreseeable future" part. lol

I'm not even finished with their first coop yet. And anyway... the next animals on the list to get a new house is us! Then maybe another for the chickens.

I use zip ties on mine. Since there are only a few, i was able to color plain ones with permanent marker to tell them apart.

We put them on for the first time at 7 weeks - very loosely of course. And the chickens paid almost no attention to them.

We just replaced them at 15 weeks, and they were still loose enough to get the scissors (this is a two person job) underneath the zip ties to cut them off.

And again, even with the renewed color, the birds barely took notice of their new jewelry. It really helps me to keep track of them and their habits.

Yup! Our 4H kids raise their broilers together so they have to be able to tell them apart. Since there are so many chicks - some years more than 80 - each kid chooses a zip tie color and puts one on each of his or her chicks. Then they use different color sharpies to mark the heads. I works great!

But you definately have to watch those ties. The chicks grow so quickly you can cause them to lose a leg if you don't change them regularly.
