For a TEMPORARY outside pen for 3 chicks, in Arizona where temps are in the 90's. This would be set up in an area that gets shade all day with passing sun. Use cement cinderblocks stacked 3 high to form a pen, up against the wall of the house. These have holes in the middle for ventilation. Cover with chicken wire that is tucked under the blocks to hold it down. The yard area here is dirt and rocks, so I thought I'd either buy a few squares of sod to lay down or roll out some astroturf stuff. This would be for daytime use only, and moved to a extra large dog crate to sleep at night. Our chicks are going to live on a farm when they are 2.5 months old, but need something that will work for them between brooder stage and then. Right now they are 10 days old and in a very large rabbit cage, so this would be for when they outgrow the cage.

You are gonna have to cover the holes in the cinder blocks. Chickens are amazingly resourceful and they will get out within a day. Otherwise fine for a TEMPORARY area.

Should work. If you can, maybe stick a few T-posts in the ground to hold them up. It should be fine, but the posts would add some extra support so the blocks don't get knocked over. The sod should work, but the chicks would probably like just plain dirt better than astroturf (so they can scratch around).
