Last night I got my first birds ever, a twelve week old Buff Orpington pullet, and six week old Barred Rock and Columbian Wyandotte pullets, hatchery bred and organic farm raised. Half a day later I see that the Orpington pecks at the younger Wyandotte and Rock. The Wyandotte also pecks at the Rock. They did, however, cuddle up together for warmth last night; I hope that is a good sign. I may add a fourth and would like a breed that produces a different coloured egg than these hens that should give me tan. I could hold out for an Easter Egger from elsewhere or this farmer has offered me a White Crested Black Polish once they are old enough to sex; they are younger than all of the girls I already have. Do you think this is a good mix? How would I know? Hubby thinks I should just go back to the farm and get one more of the breeds/ages I already have, but I don't think that would be very much fun.
