Would you eat it?

I just realized this morning that I had taken a chicken out of the freezer a week ago (last Monday (July 30) )and totally forgot it was in there. It was slaughtered vacuum sealed and frozen that day. My gut is telling me it should be okay considering the fridge its in is set cold, is rarely opened and the chicken had to completely thaw.

It should be fine if it was refrigerated the whole time. I am going to assume you took it out of the freezer and put it straight into the fridge to thaw and didn't leave it sitting out on the counter until it was completely warm before it went into the fridge.

I wouldn't leave store bought chicken in the fridge for a week, but your own home raised chicken is already starting out a couple of weeks fresher than what you buy in the market.

Yes, the freezer in the basement sits right next to the basement fridge which is my "overflow" fridge (and why I forgot it was even in there). I figured that it would be fresher now than something I bought today. Thanks!

Think about how chicken sets in the store in open refrigerators, I'm assuming for probably about a week any how. Your's was frozen, in the fridge it would take a couple of days to totally defrost, its vaccuum sealed so no air or organisms were getting in. Eat it and enjoy!

I'd eat it, for sure.

But I agree it never hurts to smell things first if you have doubts. If meat (or anything else, just about) is genuinely spoiled it's easy to tell with a quick sniff...
