Research, research, research. Sigh, I hate to say it because I believe people deserve a fair shot but I wouldnt give my birds to someone who wasnt prepared either.
If they genuinely knew at least a little something and were prepared to be further educated, thats different.
The situation you described would make me uneasy.
I wanted chickens.. So I bought like 4 books on them. Soon I want goats and turkeys. I have already ordered storey's guide to raising dairy goats as well as turkeys. I will probably invest in some more books before I purchase.
I highly doubt that the mom expects the kids to just take care of the ducks, just like with a dog no parent expects the kids to take full responsibility.Alot of kids can halp though, mine help with water bottles, feeding, checking on them
...I do not do a background search on whoever buys them
Hi! I was thinking that same thing.
If someone seems *blatantly* unprepared, I'll send them home with a printed 'care sheet' and a quart of starter til they can get to a feed store for supplies.

I hate seeing how they sell ducks and chicks at Easter, especially that the flea markets. DH has to calm me down, it is so upsetting to see little kids who's parents only bought the chic almost like a toy, you know they will be dead in a few hours, but I blame it on those who will sell them for a fast buck and don't care what happens even when they know what is going to happen. Sorry to rant but it is just cruel.

Don't fool yourself, there are some moms that should still be labeled kids..Not to be mean but I have a friend who fits that bill to a T and would not even let her baby sit my 4 yo dogs let alone any of my animals. Some people are just not inherently cut out to be guardians of animals.
