I just bought some 2-3 day old Araucana chicks, and a couple of them have bloody pecked spots on their rumps. I've had great results with the Wound Kote spray on my goats (the purple spray), and I was wondering if it was equally safe for chickens.

Also, it's terribly hot here. Is it okay to put a fan directly on the chicks in the coop? (It'd be several feet away, but still.)

Does that mean that it would be best not to use the purple stuff?

If so, what would be a good medication I probably have around the house? Mom and I were running around all day, and I *really* don't want to go back into town...

Unfortunately, I have some experience with picking.

I have used blue kote spray on my chickens, and it is safe to use, just don't get it in their eyes. However, I did not find if very effective. Although you are getting the benefit of it being an antiseptic, the other chickens don't seem to mind the taste and continue to pick at the now big blue (permanent) spot on the chicken.

I have also tried pine tar, which the chickens seemed to enjoy as well

And I don't think they are supposed to injest it.

I have had the best luck with Rooster Booster. It is made specifically for anti-picking. I bought it at my local TSC. This completely stopped tail picking in my young chickens. This will also stain feathers a purple color, but the chickens do not seem to like the taste of it. I now have it on one of my 6 week old chicks who got picked by an angry mama hen.

Good luck.

Thanks much!

The chicks were pecking from overcrowding in the store, so I think with my much much larger coop the pecking will be pretty much eliminated. In three years, I've only had one chicken I had to separate because of pecking (and even that wasn't very bad). Hopefully, proper housing and food will do the trick. They always have!

I've used Vick's Vapo Rub because the other chickens don't like the smell. I wouldn't get it close to their heads though, since it is so aromatic.
So its okay to use that BlueKote-type stuff on open sores?

On the fan, make sure part of their cage they can get away from it. It stresses them. (I drape a sheet over one corner of my cage of babies that I have quarantining with a fan on them.

threehorses.........its supposed to get really hot in a couple days. I have my recuperating hen in a crate in the coop. some days I have (besides the window fan, pulling hot air out), another fan facing the main coop. Will it stress an adult chicken to be in a gentle breeze all day?

Well you'd just have to check her out and see, really. It really bothered my rooster that I have in quarantine. You could try putting a couple of frozen water gallon jugs on top of the pen and blow the air through there from above (the pulling out fan won't matter). It'll break up the breeze a bit and cool the air. Then just have two more in the freezer and replace them in the morning.
