Wounded by a rooster

Good Morning tevepaughs,

Tylenol or ibuprofen for the pain, and is your tetanus booster up to date. Either way I would have it looked at by a Doctor Monday or Tuesday, anything deep such as a puncture wound needs attention.

Welcome to BYC.

So sorry about your injury. Rooster spur wounds have a high chance of infection and may require oral antibiotics or other treatments that need attention by a physician.

@duckets advice on a tetanus update is important, a puncture wound by a spur is a high risk wound and if you have not had a tetanus booster within 5 years, get one as soon as possible. Keep it clean but don't apply neosporin or ointment topical treatments, if it needs to drain let it and don't seal in bacteria. Try ice packs to see if they help with the pain, if not, try warm compresses. Take oral Tylenol and/or an aspirin related over the counter pain reliever - whichever you tolerate the best - until you can see or talk to your doctor.

Once you are better, consider doing something about those spurs. I think you can trim or file them.

Welcome to BYC! I'm glad you joined us! :) If it is an open wound, make sure to use alcohol swabs or something that will disinfect the wound. Roosters may have bacteria on their spurs, so that is important. Make sure to also put a band-aid over it and if pain continues, try ibuprofen. Hope you feel better soon!

Hi, welcome to BYC!

Sorry to hear your rooster spurred you, hope your leg is better soon. I think that just might be enough for me to have chicken soup for dinner.

Take care!

If you plan to take care of the spurs pick up the June/July issue of the magazine Backyard Poultry. I have the April/May issue with directions on how to do wing clipping. It also stated that the next issue would include a section on spur trimming. I have been searching for a copy, may have to give up and get a subscription.
