One of my RIR hens got a small wound on her hip, and the others started pecking at it until it was a bloody hole about the size of a cigarette filter. So I made a little quarantine pen for her, with some water, to keep her away from the others for a while. I smeared some 3 way antibiotic ointment into the wound on days 1 and 2. After that I broke a peice of aloe vera off a plant in the house and squeezed the juice into the wound. After 1 week the wound was healed and she returned to the flock.

I have treated chicken wounds that way for many years. I treat my own wounds the same way. I think that once I've made sure there is no infection, by using the antibiotic ointment, then the aloe vera makes the wound heal very quickly.

Sounds good to me - thanks for sharing. So often I read about people wanting to stitch up puncture wounds. I used to respond all the time about how important it is to allow puncture wounds to heal from the inside out, to keep the wound clean (I flush with diluted Betadine 2X/day, topically apply triple antibiotic, and of course isolate and keep warm. Has worked every time - may take a week or 2, depending on severity (skin completely ripped off back, etc), but I've never lost a bird to a wound. Now all I need is a fool-proof cure for egg-bound and crop-bound that's as easy as that, and I'll have no worries! I love that aloe is so effective for so many maladies!
