Man how weather changes so quickly! The ducks handles the winter storm fine, but we didn't have sub 0 temps at night like we do right now at 6:30am! It's only .1 degree outside! They were all hunkering together tightly up against the slider window last night to the patio, so I threw bunch of old blankets down and put up organize it panels and brought them inside. I'm such a sucker but man it did hurt when I walked outside! Looks like Monday we are POTENTIALLY going to get another hilicious(sp) winter snow/ice storm up here in Michigan and surrounding states. NOT fun!! I really need to get me a generator!

I am so tired of this cold (I am in Big Rapids, MI). We just lost our Peking last night. She last laid on Feb 2 and was so happy when the temperature went up last week. However the sudden drop of temperature on Monday night (-3 deg) finally got her.

I have been taking them inside the garage around 9 PM every night and then get them back out to their pen/house around 8:30 AM. The temperature in the garage is always a good 20 deg higher than outside because it is attached to the house. However, they have to go outside during the day and the day temperature was very low as well. In their pen/house, they also have access to a dog house but it was still too cold.

Now we have a lonely cayuga left.

Very sad.

RIP, A Xing.

Thank you so much.

Here is another picture of the Peking and the Cayuga.

My wife and I literally cry everyday for the lost Peking. She had so much personality and was extremely smart.

We truely need to buy one or two adult ducks.

I've been watching the temps and my Calls quite closely and when the temp takes a sudden dip, any duck that I even think looks like they might be compromised or feeling a bit peaked has been brought in this winter, and then put back out when the weather is out of the danger zone. So far that has worked mostly well, and I have a better plan for next winter. I am sure there are old timers who would scoff at that idea, but I frankly don't care...Calls cost too much to be killing off by not watching them closely, and I'm not of a mind to be losing some of my favorite pets over a bit of shavings getting loose in the house. My money, my ducks is how I look at it. I work outside a lot for my living and when my eyeballs are icing up behind my glasses it's time to take some extra special care of animals, in my opinion.

Sorry to hear about the deceased ducks; if you think they look like they need extra care in the cold, they might, so never let anybody bully you out of giving it!

X2. I have those Puppy Playpens and use them to make dividers for the Call Ducks and Silkies in the shop. They do not love it in there but they have plenty of room and are warm and safe. I am so sorry for the loss of your duck. Very pretty.

Thank you all.

I have seen a couple basement setups. I would love to hear what you have for them when you brought them in for an extended period of time (days or weeks).

I have been taking them in during the night since I got them but have put them out every morning around 8:30 AM. I probably should not have done that but the little housing in the basement cannot keep them during the day.
