OK - I admit straight away I'm crazy and then some, I date our eggs. Turns out my wackiness paid off somewhat. Yesterday I made poached eggs and was excited when the 1st egg was double yoker - then 2nd and 3rd too. The craziness continues - I keep a log of how many eggs a day we get so was able to go back and update log for those days that we got doubles. After looking at the log I think it is the Red Stars. Are they know for laying double yokers?

By the way breakfast was delicious - nothing like homegrown eggs.

Are they young hens. I heard young hens are more prone to lay doubles.
I like the log idea. I will do the same when my girls start laying.

I'm glad you clarified what you meant by "dating" your eggs. I thought you might be wooing them! I heard once that the first six weeks of a young hen's laying ais her "experimental" period. You are more likely to get Yx2 (yolk times two), soft shells, and other wonky characteristics during this time.

The hens are young. The first double yoker was laid at 17.1 weeks. Not all the girls are laying yet - no eggs from Brown Leghorns (white) and only 4 from Americanas. I thought I had read somewhere that there are breeds that are known to lay double yokers on a regular basis.

One other reason that we log number of eggs is to try and estimate when the chickens (eggs) have paid for the cost of the coop. We figure right now each egg is worth about $5 bucks - to bad they are not gold would pay back the cost a lot sooner.
