Wrath's Marans

I’m not sure if I’m brave enough to stuff my rooster in my coat. It’s been a while since I have picked him up and those spurs are getting pretty big.
My previous EE rooster, I would have never been able to get him in a coat, he was crazy mean! He always hunted me down to flog me :barnie he has been upgraded to the class of dinner guest...

Mine is a little moody but not real aggressive. He rarely gets more serious than foot stomping and wing flapping.

That's good, at least he's not hellbent on hurting you. Right now all my silkies are really good boys, the last mean one found other arrangements this past weekend. All my large fowl boys are 8 to 11 months and so far they are all behaving too. I had a few cockerels from my mean EE rooster, they got mean to the other chickens and a few started to threaten me, so they're all gone. We just kept 4 pullets from him and they're all nice.

I had a leghorn mix rooster that turned mean and would charge and bite my hands when I would fill the feeders. I didn’t put up with that behavior for long before I invited him to dinner.

Solo is 26 weeks and I'm still waiting for eggs from her. She's really lucky she's so darn pretty....🙂

And this guy is going to need his own area code soon. This is double red band. He is an F2 from Kong x Gloria who is Betty's daughter.
@BlueTheBrahma picked him out early to watch. He towers over the other 2 boys. I've been trying to get all 3 lined up in the same pic to compare sizes but no luck yet.

Solo is a very pretty girl! Now show us your eggies Solo!

So you will be rehoming the Gloria cockerel?

Or... you could keep him and develop a bigger bodied Marans fit for both eggs and family sized eating!

Solo has a cute face, lovely low tail. That cockerel is certainly one to watch, his bulk at such a young age is a good sign of a strong healthy marans. And his tail is low too??

She's squatted for me the other day so I'm stalking the nest boxes more than usual.

Not necessarily.

I need to get mass/type into my flock. My 2 main goals are type/mass and darker eggs, as long as I'm not getting major faults I'm trying to keep a few boys for breeders. Kongs major faults are his type.
He's got good mass but he narrows towards his rear, should be wide all the way back to his tail.
He's also got a narrow leg stance, he should have a wide stance.
His other big fault is his comb, least of my problems and an easy fix from my learning.

Most of the boys I've sold had bad type (v shape body) or overly colored. The last few I just sold I should of kept a couple from Angel because at least one was looking good so far, but the heart attack threw me into a tailspin so I decided to let them go.
I've got 6 that are 14/15 weeks now I'll need to select thru in the next few weeks and looking to keep 2 or 3 back for breeders next year. I'm seeing wide leg stances and really nice low tails in a few, but not sure on type/mass yet. So hoping to keep a couple and let them grow out more.
These 3 little boys are looking promising also, nice wide leg stance in at least 2 of them and that little double red is massive.

Long story short, he's staying for the time being, they change so much but I'm hopeful.
