I just bought 100# of starter for my 6 week olds (pullets), but the store loaded the wrong stuff into my truck. AFTER opening it, I found that I have 21% protein instead of 16-18%. Is it OK to feed them this "as is," or should I mix with scratch to lower the protein content?

Many thanks for any help received!

I feed mine 22% gamebird, some people don't like to go that high protien, but I haven't had any problems with it. I wouldn't worry about it if you have something like flockraiser or gamebird, but if it's some kind of layer with high calcium I wouldn't give it to them. My feed store would take it back even if I opened it if they loaded the wrong stuff so if you're worried about it try calling them and see if they'll exchange it.

They gave me broiler/turkey starter. At least they didn't give me layer mash. I'm glad to hear that it will likely be OK, since Kittymomma says she uses 22% gamebird feed for hers.

If you think about another way you kind of scored--The broiler/turkey is $3 more a bag then the layer is here.

ETA: That is actually what my current batch is on right now since I didn't have time to get to the other feed store and my reg. place was out of gamebird.

You can sell it online and use that money to get more bird feed

I scored 3 bags of cheapo-deapo chick feed that had huge tears in them... still had 80-90% of their stuff and they were only $5 a bag
