I have duck eggs hatching and I had to help the first 2 as they was to big to turn around to fully zip, the third one has me worried because it has pipped and broken through the shell but it’s the wrong side. Should I assist? Or should I wait? It had been a few hours and it’s still in the same position and seems to be fine other than being on the wrong side.

I suggest you help

Did the duck miss the air cell? I had two chicks miss the air cell and externally pip in my last hatch, and I was told to add 12 hours onto the hatch time because they missed the air cell. (Not ducks, but thinking it's the same for both.) Just putting this out there because I'd hate for you to assist too early. 🙂

Yes, it is trying to hatch from the opposite end of the egg. Never had this happen before.

How long has it been? Is the shell opened and can it breath... if it hasn't been long and it's breathing and doesn't seem do be in distress let it be. You may have to help but it may not be quite ready yet. It needs to absorb the yolk before fully zipping. Thay can take a while. They move their beaks like they are chewing if you see this it's not ready... you could remove a small amount of shell around the pip area to make sure it can get air and the membrane isn't still covering the beak.

i left it alone and made sure the beak was out. got up this morning and it was halfway out with the yolk still attached so atm I am keeping the yolk moist and its in my lap.

Can u put the chick back in the bottom of the egg, then put it in a cup or something similar until it's finished absorbing the yolk.. that works well..

Mine took 36 hours to hatch because they missed the air cell. (One egg, the air cell was on the wrong end so I get why the chick was confused, haha.) I was prepared to help if I needed to, but all I did was remove a tiny piece of shell where the beak was to make sure they could breathe, and they got out on their own. They were doing the chewing motion that @Mvan42 is talking about so I didn't intervene. As soon as they quit doing that, they started chirping loudly and began unzipping. 🙂

😮 Good luck with the little fellow! Sound like you're doing great! Any updates? How much yolk does the little guy still need to absorb? Hopefully, the cup thing that @Mvan42 suggested works!
